  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To examine the geographical distribution of the HIV infection
  10.        in Brazil. METHODS: In May 1992, the National STD/AIDS Control Programme
  11.        (NSACP) established the HIV sentinel surveillance for monitoring the
  12.        recent pattern of HIV infection nationwide. In the first round,
  13.        cross-sectional prevalence surveys were carried out in 7 sentinel STD
  14.        clinics located in representative cities from the different regions in
  15.        Brazil. Residual blood originally collected for VDRL were used for HIV
  16.        assay by the unlinked anonymous method. Sample collection period were
  17.        limited to a maximum of 8 weeks. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
  18.        CONCLUSION: These results show the nationwide spreading of the HIV
  19.        epidemic in Brazil, and have assisted the NSACP in obtaining the
  20.        necessary resources to expand HIV/AIDS prevention activities.
