AB OBJECTIVE: To examine the geographical distribution of the HIV infection
in Brazil. METHODS: In May 1992, the National STD/AIDS Control Programme
(NSACP) established the HIV sentinel surveillance for monitoring the
recent pattern of HIV infection nationwide. In the first round,
cross-sectional prevalence surveys were carried out in 7 sentinel STD
clinics located in representative cities from the different regions in
Brazil. Residual blood originally collected for VDRL were used for HIV
assay by the unlinked anonymous method. Sample collection period were
limited to a maximum of 8 weeks. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSION: These results show the nationwide spreading of the HIV
epidemic in Brazil, and have assisted the NSACP in obtaining the
necessary resources to expand HIV/AIDS prevention activities.
